If we do say so ourselves, we're terrific! Need some evidence?
We're not professional singers--except our director, anyway. We're a family of like-minded individuals of many occupations and ages (from college age to 80+) who love to sing and perform, strive for excellence in what we do, and also enjoy socializing into the wee hours after our Thursday night rehearsals!
Want to know more? Attend a rehearsal and see for yourself! We welcome visitors--and accept new members--throughout the year. We have guest nights throughout the year, check out our calendar to see when our next one is.
HCA welcomes everyone of any race, sex, creed or background with a desire to sing solid harmony. A background in singing is great but not absolutely required. Although helpful, the ability to sight-read music is also not a requirement for joining as members have access to part-specific recordings of the majority of our repertoire. Below is an example of the music and recordings for the song we sing at the close of each rehearsal:
It's the Music the Brings Us Together!
We rehearse in Fassett Auditorium at Croasdaile Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27705. Tell the guard you are there for rehearsal, and follow the "Event Parking" signs around the building. You'll eventually come to a parking area near the "North Commons" entrance. Park and come in - the auditorium will be on your left.
However, please contact us (see email address at the bottom of the page) before visiting; we occasionally perform at other locations on rehearsal nights, so it's a good idea to make sure we'll be at Croasdaile. We'll be happy to give you the information you need!
Maintaining the health of our members is a paramount concern. As a result, we ask the following:
It's a simple process for anyone who wishes to audition for membership in HCA.
First, we ask you to attend at least two rehearsals; this gives you a chance to get acquainted with our style of music. and to learn the song we use in our audition process.
Once you're ready, you will audition for our Music Team at the end of rehearsal. You’ll be asked to sing a few vocal exercises and patterns that will help us determine your range, tone quality, and pitch accuracy & memory.
Then you will sing the audition song in a quartet. Our director and music team will listen for correct words and notes, good vocal tone, your ability to sing your part independently, and how your sound will blend with the chorus. You will be allowed to use sheet music during the audition.
The final decision is made by the director in conjunction with the Music Team.
